One City One People

Office for Integration DCC: Notice and Reservation of date -

Dublin City Council’s Office for Integration (OFI) will lead a key initiative for the city this autumn
focused on city’s immigrant population to promote inclusion, integration and to combat racism and
discrimination. Titled One City One People the initiative will use a variety of mediums to promote the
message that Dublin is an open city, a city which respects and embraces difference, is accessible, safe and
equal and does not accept racism and discrimination.

One City One People City Transport campaign

OFI with the support of the Office for the Minister for Integration together with the participation of
the city transport companies Veoila Luas, Dublin Bus, DART Irish Rail and Bus Eireann will promote a
keynote campaign called “One City -One People Dublin does not accept Racism and Discrimination” .
All city transport networks will be used in the campaign along with prime on street JCDecaux advertising
portals.

This campaign will be launched on Wednesday 15th September 2010 at 5pm – All details TBC

A number of key thematic projects and programmes linked to this will run through the autumn
and are listed in short below: Full details will follow in full. All details at present are provisional.

Conference: One City One People – Integration: The Next Decade? A one day conference
will take place on Friday 24th September in Wood Quay venue, Dublin City Council. This
seminar will focus on the present situation Dublin is at in 2010 and discuss integration for the
next decade in relation to the City. It will reflect study and opinion on the issue of integration
and interculturalism at present and discuss developments for the coming decade on a local,
national, European and International perspective.
Open Cities-Seminar Wood Quay 14th Oct 2010 Open Cities Integration and
Competitiveness. How openness can contribute to future economic growth. Seminar 14th Oct
Anti Racism Monitoring Seminar: ENAR (European Network against Racism) and OFI
(Office for Integration) – Open forum to consider potential of city level racism monitoring

UNESCO Young Leaders against Racism and Discrimination

Two young Dubliners of immigrant origin who have shown leadership potential through their
work in raising awareness on issues of racism and discrimination in the city will represent
Dublin at UNESCO Youth Conference in Barcelona on 10-13th September 2010.
Music: An Intercultural Gospel Music festival will take place on Saturday September 25th in
Helix in Dublin in association with DCC and Metro Eireann. An Intercultural Gospel evening
will also be held in Wood Quay venue as part of culture night.
Art Exhibition. DCC in association with UNICEF will hold an exhibition called “Suitcase
Stories” – an exhibition of the stories of migrants told through artistic suitcases. DCC Civics

Fomax DIT – Crossing Cultures: Fomacs/OFI Dublin City Dialogues:
A new initiative Fomax/DCC Using digital stories commissioned by Fomax to create dialogue
on immigration and integration within local areas of the city. Project launch 15th October
DCC OFI Film Series: Film Workshops: Three films will be screened and followed by
interactive workshops focusing on the films “Invictus” by Clint Eastwood, “The Classroom” by
Laurent Cantet and “Pavee Lackeen” by Perry Ogden.

British Council/Fomacs Learning Lab: Identities and Social Justice.

Yasmin Alibhai Browne will participate in a public conversation with Susan McKay, Director
of National Women’s Council, on Friday 24 September from 12:30 -2:00 pm., at the Chester
Beatty Library.
Sanctuary: As part of Culture Night, Friday September 24th, 2010, FOMACS in association
with Storytellers of Ireland and the Irish Refugee Council, will present Sanctuary – a series
of ultra-short monologues, all less than one minute long, in which the stories of people who
have sought asylum and received refuge in Ireland are recounted on screen and through live
performance by actors and writers living here. Venue to be decided.

Lost in Translation Symposium: Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival will work with the
Centre for Transcultural Research and Media Practice, located in the DIT and City Arts to

present a one day symposium investigating the role of Arts in social integration. DCC Wood

International iconic composer attends festival in Co Kildare The Castletown Concerts 2010

Celebrating the work of Krzysztof Penderecki Krzysztof Penderecki, the Polish composer and conductor, will travel for the first time to Ireland this September 10th – 12th at the invitation of pianist Barry Douglas and Camerata Ireland to attend their festival, The Castletown Concerts 2010, in Celbridge, Co Kildare, as Guest of Honour.

The programme was launched by Dr Martin Mansergh TD, Minister of State at the Department of Finance with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works and the Arts.

The composer will conduct a number of his own works which will include the Threnody (for the Victims of Hiroshima), the piece which launched his international career as a young composer in 1960. A Grammy Award winner in 1987, 1998 and 2001 and a recipient of many honours and awards from universities and governments around the world, Dr Penderecki will also be conferred with an Honorary Doctorate of Music from NUI Maynooth while in Ireland. The concerts will take place in Castletown House and St Patrick’s College, Maynooth.

“Krzysztof Penderecki is one of the world’s greatest composers and Camerata Ireland and I are honoured that he will be with us this September in Castletown, as well as the many distinguished chamber musicians that will join us to celebrate his work. This is also an exciting opportunity for young Irish musicians to work with Maestro Penderecki for the Threnody performance, one which they will no doubt all remember for many years. We are also delighted to present a recital by the young 21-year-old winner of the 2009 Dublin International Piano Competition, Alexej Gorlatch, and we look forward to working with a local school on a pilot composing project”, commented Barry Douglas, Artistic Director of Camerata Ireland and The Castletown Concerts.

The Office of the Minister for Integration provided ethnic led organisations with a clear outline of which bodies have responsibility in relation to racist crime and racial discrimination in Ireland following the transfer of the Office of the Minister for Integration from the Department of Justice and Law Reform to the newly configured Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs.

Chopin film animation workshops for children

The film animation workshops commemorating the 2010 Chopin Year will be held between 20 and 24 July and are aimed at children aged 10-13. The workshops offer an introduction to basic animation techniques. The inspiration and soundtrack for all animations will be Chopin’s music. The participants will gain familiarity with the art of animation and in the end each one will produce at least one animated film (60-sec. long) using any chosen animation technique and will work with the group outdoors. The workshops will make use of various computer packages used in the field of digital media, therefore it is important that participants are familiar with basic computer applications.

The group of 10-15 participants, guided by 2 renowned Polish film animators, will be multinational and the workshops will be run in English only.

Participation in the workshops is free of charge.

Polish President elections, 2010

Forum Polonia organised a registration drive to inform Poles living in Ireland how to vote for the President of Poland while being here.

The campaigne was prepared in coperation with Batory Foundation in Poland.

As a result 14 000 Poles registered to vote on the 20th of June. 134 000 Poles living abroad will vote also .
Forum Polonia works closely with the Polish Consulate in Ireland in relation to organising voting stations.

Donation Drive for the Flood Victims in Poland

People in Poland have experienced torrential downpours which have brought rapidly rising floodwaters in many cities and villages. Thousands of people have lost their homes and have been deprived of any means of livelihood.

Ministerial Council on Integration

Minister Mary White T.D., Minister of State for Equality, Integration and Human Rights today announced that she has commenced the process to establish a Ministerial Council on Integration. The Minister explained that expressions of interest from migrants are now being sought for appointment to the Council and the closing date is 7th July.

Minister White said, “I plan to set up four regional forums so that I can engage directly with migrants and listen to their issues, hopes and challenges. I place great emphasis on the importance of civil society engagement and I want to work closely with our immigrant communities to ensure effective integration.”

The Minister continued, “This Council is open to individual migrants so you don’t have to be a member of a NGO or a group to apply. I want to reach out to migrants and hear the experiences and views of people who come from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds and countries of origin.”

Council meetings will be chaired by the Minister and will normally be held two to three times a year in each of the four regions i.e. in Dublin, Rest of Leinster, Munster and Connacht/Ulster. Each regional forum will be composed of 15 to 20 members and members will attend meetings in the region in which they reside. The Minister explained, “I believe that by setting up the Council in a regional formation, it will ensure that the experiences of integration at a local level will be reflected and considered.”

Expressions of interest for appointment to the Ministerial Council are now being sought from persons from the migrant community who are legally resident in Ireland for two or more years, or who have acquired Irish citizenship. Applicants for asylum or subsidiary protection will not be eligible to apply. Intending applicants should forward a Curriculum Vitae (stating country of origin also) and a covering letter outlining their background and the reasons they consider themselves suitable for appointment to the Ministerial Council to the Office of the Minister for Integration.

Minister White commented, “As the Minister responsible for integration issues, I look forward to working closely with members of our immigrant communities and I would encourage migrants to apply for appointment to the Council. It is an opportunity for individuals to have a voice in relation to their integration experiences and to help shape a better and more cohesive Ireland. I would particularly urge women from the immigrant communities to apply as I would like the Council to have a gender balance.”

Minister Mary White T.D., Minister of State for Equality, Integration and Human Rights will establish a Ministerial Council on Integration to advise her directly on issues faced by migrants.

The Minister will chair meetings of the Council. The Council will meet in regional formation. Each regional forum will be composed of 15 to 20 members who reside in the region. The members will be migrants who will be appointed for a period of five years. In appointing members, the Minister will take account, as far as possible, of factors such as the need to have a balance between countries of origin, places of residence in Ireland and the desirability of having an appropriate gender balance.

Council meetings will be convened by the Minister and will normally be held two to three times a year in each region. The four regions will be as follows:
Dublin
Rest of Leinster
Munster and
Connacht/Ulster.

Members of the Council will attend meetings in the region in which they reside. Meetings will be held in private. However, a press statement giving details of the matters discussed will be issued after each Council meeting. Travel and subsistence will be paid with regard to attendance at Council meetings in line with the appropriate Civil Service rates.
