The Abbey Theatre is introducing Polish actor, Robert Zawadzki in a new play “QUIETLY”

The Abbey Theatre presents the World Premiere of QUIETLY by Owen McCafferty

Directed by Jimmy Fay

Opening Tuesday 20 November

(Previews: 14 – 19 November)

The Abbey Theatre is delighted to present the world premiere of Owen McCafferty’s QUIETLY, the fourth play to be staged as part of the Abbey’s Great Irish Writers Season, and the second piece of new writing in succession on the Peacock stage, following the recent success of Gary Duggan’s SHIBARI.

QUIETLY marks the Abbey and Dublin debut of award winning playwright Owen McCafferty in which he teams up with Associate Artist of the Abbey Theatre, Director Jimmy Fay. The production features two of Ireland’s best known actors Patrick O’Kane and Declan Conlon. It also stars Polish actor Robert Zawadzki, who is making his Abbey debut. QUIETLY is the second production in a row on the Peacock stage to feature a Polish actor, after Alicja Ayres’ appearance in SHIBARI.

In Quietly, Jimmy and Ian, two middle aged Belfast men with a shared past, meet for the first time. They need to talk.  As the drama unfolds the trauma that has haunted their lives since adolescence is laid bare.  We come to realise their need to forgive and come to terms with their past so they can move on and embrace a better future.

Over the last 20 years many of Owen McCafferty’s plays have been performed throughout Europe, winning various awards. His play Scenes From The Big Picture won the Meyer-Whitworth, John Whiting and Evening Standard Awards. Owen, an Artistic Associate of Prime Cut Productions, is the only playwright to win these three major awards in one year for the same play. Speaking about QUIETLY, Owen McCafferty says “QUIETLY is about closure and also about how difficult that is to achieve.”

The creative team working with Owen McCafferty and Jimmy Fay includes set design by Alyson Cummins, costume design by Catherine Fay, lighting design by Sinéad McKenna, sound design by Philip Stewart and AV design by Neil O’Driscoll.

The Abbey Theatre’s Great Irish Writer Season continues on the Abbey stage in December with the World Premiere of Frank McGuinness’ dramatisation of James Joyce’s classic short story THE DEAD on December 11. Directed by Joe Dowling, former Artistic Director at the Abbey Theatre.  THE DEAD, set in Dublin, centres around the relationship between husband and wife Gretta and Gabriel Conroy and what unfolds on the night of their aunts’ annual dinner on 6 January 1903, the Feast of the Epiphany, when after an evening of laughter, music and dance Gabriel undergoes his own personal epiphany.

The Abbey Theatre acknowledges the financial support of the Arts Council.
