FP replies to the inappropriate and unfair remarks by Judge Mary Devins

Statement by Forum Polonia
2nd of August, 2012

Forum Polonia acknowledges the apologies made by Judge Mary Devins, in relation to remarks she made in a court hearing about the Polish community on Friday 27th of July.

We would also like to stress that we find any similar comments by any person in office unfair, unacceptable, dangerous and elitist, particularly in the present economic downturn.

Firstly, a Polish national’s right to social welfare is established on the same rules and merits as an Irish indigene, through paying enough PRSI contributions and by satisfying the Habitual Residence Conditions. These rules were set by the Irish government and the entitlement of every person is verified by employees of the Department of Social Protection on the basis of documentary evidence.

Secondly, we would like to point out that there are many Polish charities and groups providing voluntary work to Polish people in Ireland. Their effort should be acknowledged as they often fill in a gap in the Irish mainstream services by addressing information, cultural and language barriers.

We call for more considerate comments in relation to this matter as it is an insult to all communities living in Ireland. We would also like to see that the Irish Judiciary draws up guidelines for judges to ensure a non-repeat of this embarrassing incident.
